Sculpture, Twee handgesneden houten beelden van apostelen/heiligen

Magnificent pair of two hand-carved wooden sculptures depicting apostles or saints – 19th/20th century An impressive pair of hand-carved wooden sculptures portraying apostles or saints. Both figures are traditionally depicted holding a book, dressed in stylized robes. The figures are characterized by an expressive, rustic design, with the artisanal carving marks beautifully preserved, creating a powerful and lived-in appearance. The deep, dark patina enhances the antique character of this sculptural duo. The wooden saint figures exude a deep, contemplative spirituality, with the apostles depicted holding the Holy Scripture in their hands as a symbol of divine wisdom and proclamation. The sculptures are carved from solid wood with a dark, patinated finish and show a characteristic rustic style in which the craft marks stand out prominently. In terms of dating and provenance, these folk-art devotional images align with a tradition from the 18th or 19th century, presumably originating from a European domestic or local chapel where they served as tangible expressions of piety and faith.
