Important Baroque decorative element in carved wood with a pair of winged putti, shell and garland. Italy, 19th century. Approximately. Magnificent wooden sculpture in a Baroque taste, characterized by a composition of cherubs with notable scenographic impact, centered on a pair of winged putti arranged symmetrically on either side of an elaborate fan-shaped ornamental motif, a marine shell with radial layout and a contoured profile. The work stands out for the richness of the carving, the lively anatomical modeling of the putti and the accurate rendering of the windswept hairstyles, composed of thick curly locks. The soft volumes of the bodies, the dynamic poses and the expressiveness of the faces confer to the whole a pronounced Baroque character, in which the figurative component blends harmoniously with the ornamental repertoire. The structure is enriched with vegetal motifs, scrolls and relief decorations, while the surface preserves a suggestive brown patina with traces of beeswax finish and color variations that enhance its relief and visual depth. The complex articulation of the composition suggests an original destination within the decoration of an emblematic piece of furniture, a monumental frame, or an architectural decorative apparatus. The presence of the putti, traditionally associated with the celebratory and allegorical repertoire of the Baroque, contributes to the solemn and theatrical character of the whole. Of particular interest to collectors of ancient wooden sculpture, specialized antiquarians and enthusiasts of Italian decorative arts, the artifact presents a strong scenographic presence and a richly ornate language; the hands, faces and feet of the putti are wonderful. A patina of time and very ancient restorations are evident, with tiny losses that authenticate its historicity.
