Rare miniaturist portrait of the Emilian school from the 17th century on copper. An exceptional and refined collectible piece for connoisseurs. This oval painting from the 17th-century Emilian school is masterfully executed in oil on an authentic copper support, housed in an elegant octagonal ebony wood frame. The composition depicts a young woman with a serene expression and long dark hair, shown in three-quarters view. She wears a deep blue gown, jewel-toned, adorned with a geometric gold border with delicate red accents along the neckline, completed by a soft golden ochre mantle draped over the left shoulder. The intense saturation of the blue pigment and the smooth, enamel-like finish are classic, sought-after features of old master paintings on a metallic support, which preserves colors with remarkable brilliance through the centuries. While the sophisticated iconography strongly echoes classical allegorical representations (such as an Allegory of Poetry or a secularized Saint/Sibyl), it presents itself as a superb and highly decorative example of private devotion or chamber portraiture from the late Baroque or Neoclassical period. Stylistic context and artistic circle: From a stylistic standpoint, the painting shows strong ties to the figurative culture of the Emilia region and northern Italy in the 18th century. The idealized facial features, delicate modelling of the skin tones, and the vibrant blue dress draw notable inspiration from the famous classical archetypes of Guido Reni (such as his renowned depictions of Sibyls or allegorical virtues), highly sought after by European aristocracy during the Grand Tour’s golden age. The fluid brushwork along the gold neckline and the intimate format also reflect the influence of important masters of the mid- to late 18th century, such as Gaetano Gandolfi and his contemporaries, making this small copper plaque a refined and sophisticated example of late Baroque/Neoclassical taste.
