Scuola emiliana (XVII) - Cristo incoronato di spine

Emilian School, 17th century Christ crowned with thorns Oil on canvas, 47 x 47 cm With frame, 59 x 59 cm The work under examination depicts a touching and intimate image of Christ crowned with thorns (or Ecce Homo), attributable to the prolific and refined production of the Emilian milieu in the mid-17th century. The composition clearly sits within the fortunate iconographic tradition inaugurated and made immortal by Guido Reni, whose prototype invention is preserved at the National Gallery of Bologna, though there are several variants, such as the well-known example held at the Glasgow Museums Resource Centre. The visual setting is happily enhanced by a refined treatment of perspective and decoration: the figure is inscribed within an oval painted in faux gold relief, itself enclosed within a square carved frame with rich volutes, phytomorphic elements and acanthus leaves typical of 17th-century wood carving. The author of the work faithfully but with sensible autonomy revisits Reni’s invention of the half-length torso and the head turned three-quarters and oriented upward. The Redeemer raises his eyes to Heaven in a gesture of deep contemplation, joining the earthly suffering of the Passion with a dimension of transcendent acceptance of the divine sacrifice. The distinctive elements of the Evangelical narrative are rendered with extreme measured care: the crown of thorns finely interwoven among the hair, the slender and sharp cusps that pierce the forehead, the bamboo staff held diagonally as if a derisive scepter, and the rosaceous robe sliding over the shoulder leaving the torso exposed. From a strictly stylistic point of view, the painting reveals the idioms of Bolognese and Emilian painting of the period, balancing the verismo of anatomical details with the ideal of classical and harmonious beauty propagated by the Carracci school and perfected by Reni himself. The handling is soft and fluid, while color glazes build the fleshiness of the a flesh tone with delicate yet incisive chiaroscuro transitions. The immanent light rests vibrantly on the facial reliefs, highlighting the beard and the tousled locks of the hair and creating around the head a luminous and golden halo that functions as a slender aureole. Intended originally for private devotion and high-commission collecting, this painting testifies to the breadth of Reni’s legacy throughout the Seicento, configuring itself as an autograph interpretation of notable formal and expressive quality, capable of restoring intact all the dramatic piety of the original model. The frame is provided as a courtesy; therefore it cannot be a reason for return or complaint. For paintings purchased abroad: after payment, the procedure will be initiated to obtain the export license (ALC). All antiques sent abroad from Italy require this document, issued by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage. The procedure may take from 3 to 5 weeks from the request, so as soon as we have the document the painting will be shipped."
