Antique painting, oil on canvas, dating from the early 19th century, depicting Portrait of an Old Woman with a Velvet Hood. Suggestive oil-on-canvas painting depicting an elderly woman with a velvet hood, executed by an artist of the Flemish School in the early 19th century, as a copy or free interpretation of a famous composition linked to the work of Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669). The composition derives from the well-known model described in historical sources under the title Portrait of an Old Lady in a Velvet Hood, Her Hands Folded, depicting an elderly woman seated, with her head covered by a distinctive hood and her hands gathered in her lap. The composition is documented in historical literature on Rembrandt and appears in publications dedicated to the artist. The present canvas recognizably follows the seventeenth-century model, especially in the characteristic pose of the figure, in the headdress, in the strongly lit face, in the white collar and in the marked chiaroscuro contrast between the flesh tones and the dark clothing. Compared with the reference composition, the artist produced a closer, abbreviated version of the figure, eliminating part of the lower portion of the composition and altering the original framing. The palette features browns, earth tones, ochres, and reddish hues, with broad dark areas and a light focused on the face and hands, elements that contribute to maintaining the chiaroscuro arrangement typical of the Rembrandtian model. The work is presented in good overall condition, with age-related signs consistent with its age. A few scattered restorations are evident, as well as light varnish reveals and craquelure on the surface painting, overall of modest extent and not compromising the legibility of the depiction. The craquelure is homogeneous and attributable to the period, with no signs of active detachment. The original canvas has a lining that ensures proper support and tension. The wooden frame appears to be contemporaneous with the lining and shows no structural issues. Overall the work is solid, well preserved and with a coherent historical patina, testifying to its authenticity and natural conservation evolution over time. The painting is accompanied by an antique gilded frame. Defects, losses and signs of time are noted, along with evident restorations and additions. The frame is included as a courtesy and is not an integral part of the artwork; any damage to it will not be a reason for complaint or cancellation of the order. Dimensions of the painting: 46 x 36 cm - Dimensions of the frame: 69 x 59 cm The work comes with a photographic certificate of authenticity, as required by current law. Shipping with insured express courier and packaging carried out with the utmost care.
