This original sheet is a precious Renaissance page taken from the inner sections of the third book in the Latin edition of 1550 of Sebastian Münster's Cosmographia universalis, printed in Basel by the publisher Heinrich Petri. The front of the page (which bears at the top the heading LIBER III and the page number p. 889) is devoted to the turbulent historical vicissitudes of Saxony, opening with the conclusion of the chronicles on the conflicts between the rulers and the local clergy. The text describes in detail the biography of the fervent Archbishop of Magdeburg, Conradus de Sternberg (Corrado di Sternberg), and a famous medieval moral and anecdotal digression tied to a Jew fallen into a latrine on the Sabbath (iudeus cadit in cloacam) and the consequent refusal to render aid in order not to violate sacred rest. Below, the chapter BVVRGRAVIATVS MAGDEBVRGENsis (Cap. CCCCXLV) opens, which analyzes the origins of the ancient burgraviat of Magdeburg from the times of Otto the Great, enriched by a large initials woodcut depicting in profile a Renaissance sovereign and by important contemporary typographical notes and ink marginal annotations (Episcopus excommunicat regem, Quando uero ea defecit, non comperi). Turning the page, the back bears the header DE GERMANIA (p. 890) and is structured into two important chorographic and historical chapters of Northern Germany. The first is entitled GOSLARIA (Cap. CCCCXLVI) and examines the history of the Imperial city of Goslar, founded by Henry the Fowler, recounting its economic flourishing tied to the rich silver mines surrounding it and the privileges granted by the emperors of the Ottonian dynasty. Immediately below develops the chapter ALDENBVRGVM, SEV OLDENBVRGVM (Cap. CCCCXLVIII), dedicated to the description of the Duchy of Oldenburg and the territory of Holsatia (Aldenburgum Holsatie). Münster traces its dynastic genealogy from the first bishop Marco, analyzing the long evangelization and conversion campaigns led by the prince Goto scalco (Gotscalcus) among the populations of the Vandalo-runi and the Slavs, and describing the successive episcopal successions that have marked the ecclesiastical and territorial jurisdiction of this strategic region of Northern Europe through the centuries.
