Sébastien Bourdon (1616–1671)

Sébastien Bourdon (French, 1616–1671), - Circle of. The Holy Family with Saint Elizabeth and the Infant Saint John the Baptist Medium: Oil on canvas (lined) Dimensions: 54 x 46 cm (+ frame) Condition: Signs of age, craquele, paint layer well preserved, slightly restored. This mid-17th-century painting follows the traditions of French Baroque classicism and is associated with the circle of Sébastien Bourdon. The composition presents a standard Sacra Conversazione (Sacred Conversation) set against a classical landscape. At the center, the Virgin Mary observes the interaction between the infant Christ and the young Saint John the Baptist. Saint Elizabeth kneels in the foreground, while Saint Joseph stands behind the group in contemplation. The architectural fragments and stone blocks upon which the figures rest anchor the scene, a common period motif symbolizing the transition from the ancient world to the Christian era. The work is organized around a clear pyramidal structure, reflecting the influence of Nicolas Poussin and the Italian High Renaissance. A structural contrast is maintained between the architectural elements on the left and the open, low-horizon landscape on the right. The color palette relies on established academic harmonies. The core of the composition features the traditional combination of the Virgin’s rose-pink tunic and deep blue mantle. This is balanced in the foreground by the heavy saffron-ochre drapery of Saint Elizabeth. The flesh tones are rendered with a soft modeling that stands out against the darker, muted earth tones of the background foliage and trees. Note: The frame (Period-style carved and gilded wood frame with corner ornaments) is offered as complimentary with the painting. The frame shows visible age-related wear, including a minor missing element to the bottom right molding, but remains structurally stable and visually complementary to the artwork. Origine: Private French collection. The frame visible in the photo is provided as a service and is not an integral part of the artwork. Any damage to the frame does not constitute a valid reason for complaints or order cancellations.
