Alle Auktionen / Münzen & Banknoten / Seleucid Kingdom. Antiochos II Theos (261-246 BC). Æ (No reserve price)
Seleucid Kingdom. Antiochos II Theos (261-246 BC). Æ (Bronze, 17 mm, 4.05 g). Obv: Laureate head of Apollo right. Rev: BAΣΙΛΕΩΣ / ANTIOXOY. Tripod; to left and right, monograms. Anchor below. Reference: Hoover, Handbook of Syrian Coins: Royal and Civic Issues, type 253a. Antiochos II Theos succeeded his father in 261 BC and fought Ptolemaic Egypt for control of the eastern Mediterranean. The people of Miletos honoured him as Theos, “God”, after he freed their city from the tyrant Timarchos. Peace with Egypt was sealed by his marriage to Berenike, daughter of Ptolemy II. After his death in 246 BC, rival claims involving her son and the sons of his earlier wife Laodike plunged the dynasty into a succession crisis and renewed war.
