An exceptional set of five original ecclesiastical authentication documents on paper and parchment from the last quarter of the 19th century. Partially printed and hand-filled with ink, these bilingual documents (Latin and local mentions) bear cold-stamped seals, chancery signatures, and the coats of arms of high church dignitaries. This type of document is actively sought by sacred art collectors to complete, document, or authenticate period reliquaries. Walterus Steins, titular Archbishop of Bostra – May 17, 1877 The manuscript indicates relics “ex ossibus,” i.e., bone fragments, of Saint Ignatius of Loyola and Saint John Berchmans, two Jesuit saints. This identification is further corroborated by an authentic entry for Walter Steins from 1877 listed with exactly these two saints. 2. Rome, Monastery of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem – February 22, 1863 This one is very interesting: it is not strictly a fragment of the True Cross. The text certifies a small iron nail that was in contact with the Holy Nail kept in the Basilica Santa Croce in Gerusalemme in Rome, presented as one of the nails used to attach Christ to the Cross. It is therefore a Passion contact relic. 3. Abbaye d’Affligem – Godehardus M. J. Heigl – August 20, 1893 I read: “Ex ossibus Beati Gerard Majella Redemptoristi et Conf.” → bone fragment of Blessed Gerard Majella, Redemptorist and confessor, today Saint Gerard Majella. It is thus a relic ex ossibus. 4. Frater Benedictus, abbot of Westmalle – June 17, 1896 It is an authentic multiple. The handwritten line seems to indicate: Saint Peter the Apostle; Saint John the Baptist, Forerunner of Our Lord Jesus Christ; Saint Vincent de Paul, confessor; Saint Brigid, widow; and a relic “ex velo” of Saint Therese, virgin. For the latter name, I would still keep a small reservation until we have a larger close-up of the handwritten line. 5. Franciscus Marinelli, Bishop of Porphyre – Rome, April 22, 1875 This one contains several relics. I clearly distinguish Saint John the Baptist, Saint John the Apostle and Evangelist, Saint Mary Magdalene with the mention “ex Velo” (fragment of a veil/fabric), and Saint Veronica Giuliani, with “ex Ossib.”, thus a bone fragment. All were placed in a small oval reliquary (theca) equipped with a crystal and sealed. Photos are an integral part of the object descriptions and complement their presentation. They allow you to appreciate their condition and characteristics. Please examine them carefully before any engagement. The item will be carefully packed and shipped with tracking number to ensure fast and secure delivery.
