A premium automotive technical poster dedicated to the 1966 Shelby Cobra 427 — one of the most celebrated American performance cars of the 1960s and the ultimate big-block development of the original Cobra concept. This artwork presents the Shelby Cobra 427 in a clean period engineering-document style, combining precise front, side, rear and overhead views with dimensional references and a detailed representation of its massive Ford FE V8. The Shelby Cobra The Cobra was created by combining a lightweight British AC roadster with American Ford V8 power. Carroll Shelby’s concept was fundamentally simple: place a powerful American engine into a compact and lightweight European chassis. Early Cobras used smaller Ford V8 engines, but continuous development ultimately led to the substantially more powerful and extensively redesigned Cobra 427. The Cobra 427 The 427 represented far more than an engine upgrade. To accommodate the large Ford FE V8 and its substantially greater performance, the chassis was redesigned with larger-diameter tubing, wider bodywork, revised suspension and significantly larger wheels and tires. The result retained the compact proportions and minimalistic character of the original Cobra while becoming a considerably more aggressive machine. Ford FE 427 Side-Oiler V8 At the heart of the Cobra is the legendary Ford FE 427 cubic-inch V8. With a displacement of approximately 7.0 litres, the naturally aspirated pushrod V8 was developed from Ford’s FE engine family. The Side-Oiler configuration was designed to provide improved lubrication to the main bearings under sustained high-performance operation. In road specification, the 427 was commonly rated at approximately 425 bhp at 6000 rpm, with approximately 480 lb-ft / 651 Nm of torque. In a car weighing only around one tonne, the enormous V8 produced an exceptional power-to-weight ratio. Front-Engine Architecture The 427 V8 is mounted longitudinally in the front of the chassis and sends its power exclusively to the rear wheels. The large overhead technical illustration reveals the engine beneath the bodywork while showing the extremely compact two-seat cockpit and characteristic roadster proportions. Four-Speed Manual Transmission Power is transmitted through a four-speed manual gearbox. There are no complex electronic systems separating the driver from the mechanical components — the Cobra’s character is defined by its large-displacement engine, manual transmission, lightweight chassis and rear-wheel-drive layout. Independent Suspension The 427-generation Cobra received a substantially redesigned chassis and independent suspension. The changes were necessary to handle the increased power, wider tires and higher performance of the big-block car. Combined with the compact 2286 mm wheelbase, the architecture created an exceptionally direct and mechanically focused sports car. Iconic Roadster Design The Cobra 427 is instantly recognizable by its dramatically widened wheel arches, low windscreen, large front grille and muscular proportions. Side-exit exhaust pipes and the roll hoop became particularly recognizable visual elements of competition-inspired Cobra configurations. Despite its aggressive appearance, the underlying shape remains remarkably simple: a compact open two-seat body wrapped tightly around a large engine, drivetrain and wheels. Technical Dimensions Wheelbase: 2286 mm Overall length: Approximately 3960 mm Overall width: Approximately 1730 mm Overall height: Approximately 1245 mm Body: Two-seat roadster Its short wheelbase and compact overall dimensions emphasize just how large the 7.0-litre V8 was relative to the vehicle surrounding it. Performance The Ford FE 427 V8 produces approximately 425 bhp in the specification represented here, with approximately 480 lb-ft / 651 Nm of torque. Curb weight is approximately 1065 kg. Period performance figures vary depending on specification, gearing, tires and testing conditions, but approximately 4.5 seconds from 0–100 km/h and a top speed around 265 km/h illustrate the extraordinary performance available from the big-block Cobra. CSX3000 Series The 427 Cobra belongs to the CSX3000-series generation associated with the coil-spring big-block cars. These cars represented the most extensively developed form of the original Cobra architecture and remain closely associated with the model’s legendary reputation. Exact equipment and mechanical specifications can vary between individual chassis, competition configurations and later modifications. Detailed Technical Composition The artwork includes a true front elevation, large side profile, rear elevation and an oversized orthographic top view. The overhead illustration exposes the Ford FE V8 installation while showing the compact cockpit, two-seat configuration and distinctive wide-body architecture. Engine, transmission, chassis, dimensional and performance information is arranged along the lower section in the style of period engineering documentation. A Shelby American-inspired technical inspection stamp completes the archival presentation. Its technical-document aesthetic is particularly suited to enthusiasts of Shelby American, classic racing machinery and mechanically focused sports cars. A technical celebration of one of the defining Anglo-American performance cars — combining a lightweight roadster chassis, enormous 427 cubic-inch Ford V8, four-speed manual transmission and unmistakable Cobra proportions. The poster will be carefully packed for shipping to ensure safe delivery.
