Provenance: Provenance from a private collection; Simon de Passe (also known as Simon van de Passe, c. 1595–1647) was a famous Dutch engraver and draughtsman, a member of a very important dynasty of artists active across Europe during the 17th century. Between 1616 and 1622, Simon de Passe settled in London, a golden period in which he achieved extraordinary success. He became the preferred engraver of the James I Stuart court, producing portraits of exceptional precision that defined the public image of the royal family and English nobility of the time. Among his most iconic works from this period are: • The Pocahontas portrait (1616), the only live-engraved likeness of the famous Native American captured during her visit to England. • The official portraits of King James I, Queen Anne of Denmark, and Prince Charles (the future Charles I). • The faces of the highest offices of State and Church, just like the engraving of Archbishop George Abbot printed in 1616.
