(London 1794).- Die vorliegende Arbeit gilt als ein Meilenstein in der Geschichte des Experiments mit Modellen in den technischen Wissenschaften. 1752-53 hatte Smeaton (1724-1792) mit ober- und unterschlächtigen Wasserrädern experimentiert und die Überlegenheit der ersteren herausgefunden. 1759 überprüfte er die gängigen Theorien der Windmühlen und lieferte wertvolle Aufklärungen über die zweckmäßige Konstruktion der Windflügel (vgl. Karmarsch, Geschichte der Technologie, Seiten 196 und 201). In 1752-53, Smeaton (1724-1792) had experimented with overshot and undershot waterwheels and discovered the superiority of the former. In 1759, he reviewed the prevailing theories of windmills and provided valuable insights into the efficient design of windmill sails (cf. Karmarsch, *Geschichte der Technologie*, pages 196 and 201). 'Girard's enthusiastic translation of Smeaton's work early in the 19th century gave it a place of prominence in French as well as English engineering literature' (Rouse/Ince, pp. 121ff. with 2 illustrations, here p. 123). - The engravings show the experimental models. - Half-title page with a monogrammed dedication in the translator Girard's (1765-1863) own hand.
