Spectacular Muricidae Rare 156 mm Alabaster Murex...

Magnificent collectible specimen of Siratus alabaster (Reeve, 1845), internationally known as Alabaster Murex, with a length of 156 mm. This spectacular shell belongs to the Muricidae family and is one of the most elegant and instantly recognizable species of the genus Siratus. Its natural architecture features a robust, fusiform central body, surrounded by broad alar varices, thin radial lamellae, and long spiniform processes that extend in several directions. The coloration ranges from alabaster white to ivory, with delicate cream and pale yellowish hues following the growth lines. The wide, bright opening, the elongated siphonal canal, and the almost sculptural arrangement of the spines confer the specimen with an extraordinarily dynamic presence. Siratus alabaster lives in the deep waters of the western Pacific, mainly between southern Japan, Taiwan, and the Philippines. It is a marine predatory gastropod belonging to the Muricidae family, adapted to life on deep-sea bottoms. The species also holds a special place in the history of conchology. The first known specimen was collected in the Philippines by Hugh Cuming during the 19th century and remained a great rarity in natural history collections for a long time. The subsequent introduction of deep-water nets made it possible to find better-preserved specimens, allowing collectors to fully appreciate its complex structure. With its 156 mm, this specimen surpasses the length commonly indicated for the species and constitutes a refined object of collection, ideal for a collection of marine shells, a Wunderkammer, or an exhibition dedicated to natural history. The wing-like expansions and spines of Muricidae are naturally very thin and delicate. Readers are therefore invited to examine the images carefully, which are an integral part of the description. Sample data Scientific name: Siratus alabaster Author: Reeve, 1845 Common name: Alabaster Murex Family: Muricidae Class: Gastropoda Species provenance: Western Pacific Size: 156 mm Type: natural marine shell for collectio
