Large quarto, publisher’s gray cloth binding, red title in Gothic type on the front cover. French translation by Madeleine Leclerc. A major overview by Alfred Stange, a German art historian specializing in Gothic painting, devoted to the evolution of German painting from the 14th to the 16th century. Extensively illustrated with full-page black-and-white photographic reproductions. Notably featured are the Master of the Veronika, the Master of the Life of Mary, Hinrik Funhof, and numerous masters from various Germanic schools, allowing readers to trace the development of painting from the International Gothic style through the early decades of the Renaissance. The book serves as a comprehensive resource on the German Primitives, with particular attention paid to regional schools, altarpieces, and religious painting of the 14th and 15th centuries. The binding is in generally good condition, with a few small stains and signs of wear; the interior is clean, with a few scattered light foxing spots.
