Stefano Nurra - Sea traffic

In this work, the artist pushes the exploration of matter and space toward a choral complexity, transforming the surface of the canvas into a fluid and dynamic map. Dominated by deep tones ranging from petrol blue to dark teal, the painting unfolds in a dense weave of irregular geometric blocks that overlap and intersect, giving rise to a true submerged architecture. The strong sculptural component of the painting is the real visual engine of the work: the boundaries between the different areas are marked by crests of dense, pasty color, reliefs that catch the light and convey the tactile sensation of a sea lived, carved by invisible currents. Within this geometric labyrinth, the viewer’s attention is drawn to four micro-vessels. Not simple decorative details, but vectors of life and solitary trajectories that break the stagnation of abstraction. Each boat traces its own course and, above all, releases a white and tactile wake — dense layers of pure color applied with a spatula that cleave the darkness of the background. These wakes act as energetic vectors, optical guides that lead the eye from one corner of the canvas to the other. It is a work that speaks of parallel destinies, of missed encounters and inner navigation. The structural rigor of the dark blocks contrasts with the gestural explosion of the white wakes, creating a perfect balance between the chaos of the open sea and the millimetric precision of the human journey.
