Fossil Pastern Bone of an Ice Age Horse (Equus ferus) - Pleistocene Fossil hoof bone (third phalanx / toe bone).Species: Equus ferus (ancient horse / Ice Age horse).Geological period: Pleistocene (about 20,000 – 50,000 years old).Provenance: North Sea / Netherlands Offered is a beautiful and characteristic fossil hoof bone of a horse from the last ice age. This specific bone formed the hard, weight-bearing core inside the horse’s hoof. The fossil is in excellent condition of preservation and perfectly shows the anatomical features so beloved by collectors. Very striking is the semi-circular shield shape and the typical porous surface structure. The fine openings (foramina) through which the blood vessels Once fed the hoof are still clearly visible. Through centuries of exposure to minerals in an oxygen-poor soil, the piece has developed a splendid, deep dark-brown patina with a light natural shine. A nice piece of Dutch Ice Age fauna that fits perfectly in any paleontological collection. See the photos for an accurate personal impression of the details and quality. The horses could roam freely between present-day Netherlands and England, because the area was a continuous landmass. After the last Ice Age, the steppe wisent, wild horses, mammoth and woolly rhinoceros disappeared definitively. This little hoof bone has been desalinated and is still in clean water; everyone conserves it in their own way, and I am happy to leave that to the next owner as well. Doggerland no longer exists, but traces of it can still be found on the beaches of the North Sea. It happens regularly that walkers, enthusiasts and researchers find something special there. Also wondrous treasures such as a vertebra of a wild horse. Even in dredged sand flats and in fishing nets bones are brought to the surface, such as this one in Summer 2024. Info: Fossilised thoracic vertebra of a wild horse Late Pleistocene Find location: North Sea Equus ferus (wild horse) Length 10 cm Width 8 cm Thickness 4 cm Nice little hoof bone in good condition, salvaged from the North Sea will be well packed and sent by registered mail
