Susanna's Bath. Italian or Flemish school of the 16th century

Descriptio Oil on canvas. Dimensions 54 × 80 cm. The composition depicts the biblical scene of Susanna’s bathing, where she is surprised by the elders, set in a palatial garden with a mythological fountain. The sensuality of the female body contrasts with the sobriety of the elders, who attempt to conceal their intentions with discreet glances. The nighttime scene is rendered with diffused light and soft contrasts. The style is characteristic of the viceregal school of New Spain, with Italianate influences, especially in the female figure, which recalls Mannerist models adapted to the local Baroque sensibility. The use of red and white highlights Susanna’s figure in a dark setting, giving her visual prominence. Due to its age and history of use, this lot may show signs of wear and previous interventions.
