Born before sustained contact with Europeans, she spent her childhood at the Kangingarra waterhole in the northern reaches of the Canning Stock Route before walking in from the desert as a teenager to Tjumundora, one of the region's earliest mission settlements. Among the pioneering women painters of Balgo, Bootja Bootja became renowned for her bold use of colour and her distinctive visual language, which combined traditional iconography with depictions of trees, snakes and Country. From 1996, she developed her innovative fields of luminous dotting, creating paintings that radiated the same warmth, vitality and exuberance for which she was so well known. Until her passing in 2003, her work remained a joyful expression of her life, culture and Country. This painting depicts Mangarri (bush foods) from Susie Bootja Bootja's Country. The slashing forms around the edges represent Tjurrilpatja (bush carrot), while the dense fields of dotting at the centre depict Tjundar (bush onions). As a senior Cultural Woman, Susie drew upon her extensive knowledge as a hunter and gatherer, regularly collecting these traditional foods. Her paintings celebrate not only the abundance of Country but also the enduring cultural practices and knowledge passed down through generations. © SUSIE NAPALTJARRI BOOTJA BOOTJA / Copyright Agency, 2026
