SWEDEN. 2 Daler, ND (1587). Stockholm (or Vadstana) Mint. Johan III.

Wholesome Large-Sized 16th-Century 2 Riksdaler SWEDEN. 2 Daler, ND (1587). Stockholm (or Vadstana) Mint. Johan III. PCGS EF-40. Dav-LS572; Delzanno-6 (R); AAH-20; Bruun-509. Type II. Variety with "VERTS" and "TIMEMVS" spelling in legend. Obverse: Armored bust of the King right, holding globus cruciger and sword, 23 provincial crowned heraldic arms and legend in two lines divided by beaded border; Reverse: Crowned arms of Sweden (Kalmar Union) and Folkung lion alternating with the seal of the house of Vasa superimposed in the center, legend around in three lines divided first by a beaded border than by a single line. A RARE spelling variety with "VERTS" rather than the typical "VERITS", and an overall pleasing example of this desirable Double-Daler type struck under Johan III (John III of Sweden), renowned for deposing and likely poisoning his half-brother Eric XIV. Eric XIV was in a state of mental disorder at the time, having personally murdered several incarcerated Swedish nobles (see: Sture murders). Deeply toned and moderately worn, with an even strike and ample detail remaining of the intricate design. Estimate: €8,000 - €12,000. “NOTICE TO EU BUYERS: This lot is temporarily imported into Denmark and, following the auction, must be returned to the United States to close the temporary import.
