Swift (Jonathan) Cadenus and Vanessa, first London edition, 1726

Swift (Jonathan) Cadenus and Vanessa, first London edition, half title, occasional foxing, creasing to last few ff., modern calf, pencil inscription to rear pastedown reads 'Bound by BCM 1996', near-fine, spine slightly sunned, [Teerink 659; ESTC T132876], 8vo, J. Roberts at the Oxford-Arms in Warwick Lane, 1726. *** This copy features the ten incriminating lines towards the end of the poem on p.35 that were censored in other early editions, beginning "But what success Vanessa met,/ Is to the world a Secret yet". These were likely first printed in the second Dublin edition, then in the first London edition, omitted from the second, and reintroduced in the third (Teerink). Provenance: From the library of Bruce Arnold, previously sold at the Sale of the Library of the Late Bruce Arnold (1936-2024), Purcell Auctioneers, 2025. Included is a receipt from Henry Sotheran Ltd to Arnold for this volume, dated 1997.
