Switzerland - Assia / Hesse

Fascinating original sixteenth-century woodcut (c. 1574–1580) taken from the celebrated Cosmographia by Sebastian Münster, printed in Basel by Heinrich Petri. The print depicts the geographical map of the Landgraviate of Hesse (Hessen) oriented with north to the right, accompanied by the title Beschreibung des Hessenlands, the descriptive text in early German, and a wood-engraved initial cap. The verso of the page (p. 1159) contains the continuation of the text with the printed genealogical diagram. Dimensions: Height 28 cm - Width 19.5 cm, without frame Conservation conditions: Sheet/Engraving: Good overall condition. Original laid paper of the period with a charming patina of time and slight ambered foxing along the margins. On the back there are faint traces of old mounting tape on the peripheral edges, which do not affect the print. Frame: Elegant classic gilded frame with chased finish in good vintage condition.
