(t) CHINA. Sinkiang. Mace (Miscal), ND (ca. 1878-80). Lanchou Arsenal

Extremely Rare Cash Style Sinkiang Mace (t) CHINA. Sinkiang. Mace (Miscal), ND (ca. 1878-80). Lanchou Arsenal Mint. Kuang-hsu (Guangxu). PCGS Genuine--Harshly Cleaned, EF Details. L&M-808; K-1000 = KM; WS-1160; Wenchao-250 (rarity: ★★★★); SGSC-Unlisted. An EXTREMELY RARE issue, of which only a small handful have traded in the past few decades, this silver Cash style issue, while displaying limited design motifs, it makes up for in historical character. Though a mint is unlisted, research has indicated that the Arsenal at Lanchou in Kirin likely served as the production facility. It is believed that General Tso Tsung-t'ang ordered this emission in order to pay his soldiers during their regional campaign against the rebel Yakub Beg. An impressive and important example for any collector of Sinkiang coinage, this Mace does display handling in the form of cleaning. Nevertheless, given the extremely uncommon offering, we expect substantial support for this example. Estimate: $5,000 - $7,500. Provenance: From the Robin C S Cheng (鄭鎮新) Collection.
