Artist: Tokuriki Tomikichirō (徳力富吉郎, 1902–2000) Title: Rakushisha (落柿舎) — "The Hut of Fallen Persimmons," Saga, Kyoto Date: c. 1980s (late Shōwa) Edition: Hand-signed by the artist in pencil Format: Shikishi-ban (near-square sheet), approx. 27.5 × 24.5 cm Technique: Nishiki-e (colour woodblock) on washi Condition: Excellent! About the print Rakushisha stands in Sagano, at the western edge of Kyoto near Arashiyama. It is one of the most important sites in the history of haiku. It was the retreat of Mukai Kyorai (1651–1704), one of Matsuo Bashō's closest disciples. The name comes from an anecdote Kyorai told himself: he had sold the fruit of the persimmon trees around his hut to a merchant, and a storm brought the whole crop down overnight before it could be picked. Bashō stayed at Rakushisha in the early summer of 1691 and wrote his Saga nikki (Saga Diary) there. Later poets revered the hut as a place of pilgrimage. The present thatched building is a later reconstruction and is still open to visitors today, with a straw raincoat and hat hung by the entrance to show whether the owner is at home. Tokuriki Tomikichirō came from a Kyoto family of painters who had served the Hongan-ji for twelve generations. Views of his native city were the core of his work for more than fifty years, from the pre-war sets published by Uchida to his own post-war publishing house, Matsukyū. This impression is signed by hand in pencil.
