Ted Williams autographed c.1940s Navy jersey with strong attribution and supporting material. Gray flannel jersey has "Navy" lettered across the front in blue felt with number "9" on back. Remnants of a well worn Wilson tag are in the collar and there is a "Ted Williams" marker signature below. "Williams" is chain stitched on the front tail. The sleeves have been shortened and there is use, wash, and some general age related wear throughout. Formerly part of the famed Barry Halper Collection and there are a pair of notes which were handwritten and signed by Williams himself reading "This looks like the real article as best I know, Barry finds things nobody else can" and "To Barry, I had to have worn that for sure, Navy 43 1943." In addition, a period photographic presentational collage done to commemorate the 1945 Championship series played between Navy teams in Pearl Harbor (a rarity in its' own right) is signed "Barry, This matches the uniform of mine, Ted Williams." While it cannot be stated with certainty that the jersey was issued to Williams himself the case is compelling as it appears to be all original with the stitched in name showing appropriate age. Williams twice interrupted his Hall of Fame career to serve as a United States military aviator; first as a Navy flight instructor during World War II and later flying combat missions as a Marine pilot in the Korean War. Despite missing nearly (5) full seasons of baseball in his prime, his career numbers are remarkable, and one can only imagine what he would have accomplished playing in a time of peace. The offered jersey retains exceptional display qualities and is poignant reminder of the dedication that one of the greatest hitters of all-time displayed for his country. While currently available resources do not allow for anything more than an attribution to his use, it is possible that additional material may surface in the future to allow for a more concrete conclusion. Includes full LOAs from Beckett related to the two handwritten notes and signature in jersey and auction LOA from JSA for the presentational collage: EX
