The Last Move What remains of a work when there is no one left to inhabit it? The spectator immediately recognizes Diego Velázquez's Las Meninas. His gaze instinctively searches for the characters. Yet, they are no longer there. He feels a void. And it is precisely this absence that becomes the true subject of the work. The moving boxes are not mere moving boxes. They become the transport crates of our collective memory. The Fragile labels, the inscriptions, the wrappings evoke a time when even our heritage seemed able to be moved, stored, or forgotten like an ordinary object. We protect objects more than the memories they contain. By making the characters disappear, the work reveals what was previously invisible: the absence. An absence that speaks as much of Velázquez as of our era, where images flash by more quickly than they imprint themselves on our memory. For it is not the works that disappear first.
