Alle Auktionen / Antike Kunst / Terracotta anthropomorphic applique from the Greco-Roman period

Bronze-terracotta anthropomorphic figure from the Greco-Roman period, 1st–3rd centuries CE. Description of the piece The piece presents a frontal anthropomorphic morphology, with a face of human features and very schematic grotesque and possibly grotesque or apotropaic in character. Highlight: - Two circular openings corresponding to the eyes and a third larger opening in the oral area, with a prominent nose. - The face is framed by a kind of hairstyle, eyebrows, beard, headdress or ornamental element, formed by stepped lateral reliefs. - At the top appears a crest or headdress with two lobes. - Below the face there is an area that seems to represent a beard, pectoral or ornamental element. - The surface shows wear with a very irregular brown-ochre patina and a rough texture with dark zones that could correspond to surface deposits, ancient pigmentation or alteration of the material due to prolonged exposure. The presence of pierced eyes and mouth clearly recalls the small terracotta masks from the Greco-Roman world, especially theater and votive masks, dating between the 1st century BCE and 2nd century CE. OBJECT: Mask MATERIAL: Terracotta CULTURE: Greco-Roman PERIOD: 1st century BCE to 2nd century CE DIMENSIONS: 34 x 15 x 12 mm WEIGHT: 14.60 g Surface shows calcifications and concretions typical of antiquity and of prolonged burial, which are the best guarantee of its authenticity.
