This collection was developed in the mid-19th century, a period when Gautier sought to refine the poetic language to mirror the work of a goldsmith or sculptor. Gaston Bussière (1862-1928) is a French Symbolist painter and illustrator, a student of Alexandre Cabanel and Gustave Moreau at the École des beaux-arts de Paris. This collection gathers short, finely wrought poems celebrating formal beauty, plasticity, artifice, and art through meticulous evocative descriptions of jewelry and precious stones. Binding signed at the tail by R. V. with light rubbing and slightly worn edges but overall in good condition.
