Description of the City and Lands of Breda: containing the Antiquity of the County of Strijen, its very first inhabitants, and ancient form, with a historical account of the life of the Counts of Strijen, and thereupon followed by the Lords of Breda, together with the rise and first beginnings of the City of Breda, its name, first enclosure, and further enlargements as well as a careful and concise description of the Land of Breda. Collected from many old and new writers, with copper plates - The Hague, Jacobus vanden Kiekeboom, 1744 - (XXVIII) 545 (1) pp - leather bound Reasonably good. Gouges and impact marks on the binding, paper remnants on the lower half of the front endpaper, loss of leather at the corners top and bottom of the spine as well as on the other front cover and some on the top edge of the back cover. Right hinge open; leather of the front cover has at some time been loose and reattached to the front board. Inner hinge of the front largely open – the book block fixed in the binding. Paper and wax residues from two seals on the flyleaves. A piece at the top cut from the last endpaper. Inner margin of the title page verso glued to the following text page. Interior browned, here and there a spot, a light moisture spot(s) in the inner margin over a large part of the pages – inner margin from the beginning to about page 40 thus slightly degraded; black spots in the inner margins of about thirty pages and on the leaf of a few. Loss of the side margin on leaves 157/158. Tear along the text engraving on this page. Tear about 7 cm, in two leaves, large chunk removed from the margin of two leaves. Small tear, 1–2 cm, in the margin of six leaves. Contains a large map, 18 ground plans/engraved plates and several dozen images of coats of arms/medals in the text – all depicted - Map of Breda as the city appeared in the year 1350 - View of Breda as the city appeared in the year 1500 - Breda by Maurice with new fortifications provided in 1622 - Ground drawing of the city Breda – open at the bottom, folded to show, about 15 cm, repaired tear at the lower margin on the verso, 1 cm, loss on the right side - Court of the Princes of Orange at Breda – tear at the bottom on the verso repaired - Court of Valkenberg – tear at the bottom on the verso repaired - Illustration of the Gootekerk and Towers – two flaps bottom-left and top-right respectively showing the old houses and the old tower - Illustration of a tomb - Illustration of figures in reliquary - Tombstone of Engelbregt – a small hole at the bottom in the image on the fold, tears at the bottom on the verso repaired - Tombstone of Jan van Breda - Wendelin’s Chapel - The small church - Gasthuis - 3 plates with coats of arms - Plate with names and arms - Grote kaart: New and improved map of the land and the batteries of Breda, tear, 1 cm, at the bottom fold Will be sent by registered mail.
