Thrace, Byzantion Triobol 387-340 BC (No reserve price)

Thrace, Byzantion. 387-340 BC. Triobol (Silver, 11 mm, 2.21 g). Obv: Bull walking to left atop dolphin; ΠΥ above. Rev: Quadripartite incuse square in the form of stippled 'mill sail' device. Reference: SNG Stancomb 2, Schönert-Geiss 236-590; HGC 3.2, 1390. Byzantion, a strategically vital Greek colony on the Bosporus, issued coinage reflecting its maritime dominance and economic strength. The bull standing on a dolphin symbolizes reliance on trade and seafaring. The quadripartite incuse reverse is characteristic of early Greek coinage. This drachm dates to a period of Persian influence, conflict with Athens, and the rise of Macedonian power under Philip II.
