Titanic Captain Edward Smith Signed 1897 Document

Original 1897 British Board of Trade Certificate of Discharge signed by Captain Edward John Smith, who would later command RMS Titanic on her ill-fated maiden voyage in April 1912. The document dates from Smith's earlier White Star Line career as captain of the SS Majestic and bears his signature, "E.J. Smith," in the designated master's signature field. Issued for a 24-year-old Glasgow-born fireman serving aboard the Majestic, official number 97763, the certificate records his engagement at Liverpool on December 30, 1896, and discharge on January 20, 1897, following a New York voyage. Bearing a Liverpool Mercantile Marine Office stamp dated January 22, 1897, with Very Good (VG) ratings for both conduct and ability. Smith spent decades commanding White Star Line vessels before being selected to captain the Titanic. He perished in the disaster on April 15, 1912. This document provides an early example of his signature in an official maritime capacity, approximately fifteen years before the sinking. Exhibits toning, original folds, edge wear and a small puncture affecting the seaman's name. Estimate $6,000 - $8,000
