Lot of two characteristic examples of polychromed Balinese woodcarving from Indonesia, each representing a different facet of traditional Balinese art and mythology. 1. Balinese Janger- or Legong-dancer (Left) Bali, Indonesia circa 1970-1980 This refined figure depicts a traditional Balinese dancer, probably portrayed in a characteristic pose from the Janger Dance or Legong dance. • Details: The figure stands out for its dynamic, slender stance and the elaborated head tone (gelungan). She holds her arms aloft and wears a flowing red scarf (selendang) that suggests movement • Features: Richly painted with traditional mineral colors (polychromy) in red, green and gold tones. 2. Balinese Pendeta / Priest- or Sage figure (Right) circa 1950-1960 The rectangular, more compact wood carving on the right is a representation of a Pendeta (Balinese priest) or a holy sage (Rishi). • Details: This type of woodcarving has a more totemic structure and shows a seated or standing figure with an expressive, somewhat smiling face, mustache and beard. Often these figures hold ritual objects, such as a water pot (Kamandalu). • Features: This specific figure shows typical characteristics of Antique Balinese Pendeta woodcarving from the early to mid-20th century, finished with a layered, somewhat worn painting. Dimensions: listed with the photos. Condition: excellent; the dancer is missing paint here and there. The priest shows signs of use, giving it character!
