Two Egyptian Predynastic Limestone Mace Heads, Naqada Period

Two Egyptian Predynastic Limestone Mace Heads, Naqada Period

North Africa, Egypt, Predynastic period, Naqada culture. A pair of hand-worked limestone mace heads, each cut to the piriform (pear-shaped) profile that defines late Predynastic Egyptian weaponry. Both taper from a broad, rounded striking crown to a narrower base, and each is pierced through its axis with a tapering socket for a wooden haft, the drill marks still legible at the mouth. The stone retains a smoothly ground, faintly lustrous surface, mottled cream and tan where mineral staining has settled into the matrix. Piriform maces succeeded the earlier disc-shaped type and became the emblem of authority itself: the weapon the ruler lifts above a captive on Egypt's earliest ceremonial palettes and maceheads. Whether these two served as arms, votives, or tokens of rank cannot be settled, though the type spans all three roles. The shift from disc-shaped to piriform maceheads is one of the sharper typological markers in Egyptian prehistory, taking hold across the Naqada II and III horizons as centralized power consolidated in Upper Egypt. The form outlived its practical use: by the First Dynasty the raised pear-shaped mace had become the standard pictorial shorthand for royal dominance, fixed most famously on the Narmer Palette and on the great votive maceheads deposited at the Hierakonpolis "Main Deposit," where examples in limestone, breccia, and harder stones were carved at scales far beyond anything a warrior could swing. The pose persisted in temple relief for three thousand years, which means that a plain limestone macehead of this kind stands near the origin point of one of the longest-lived images in Egyptian art. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. Item # 204447
