Two Navajo Sterling Silver Flasks with Stamped & Engraved Decoration

Native American, Southwestern United States, Navajo (Dine). A pair of sterling silver snuff bottles, or small flasks, each with a flattened canteen body, a cylindrical neck, and a fitted cap. The taller oval bottle is covered in dense die-stamped work. A stippled diamond sits at the center, and fluted fan panels and scalloped fields of tiny florette stamps radiate from it in a cross formation. A link chain tethers its cap. The rounder flask is worked in fine stipple engraving. One face carries a quartered circle medicine wheel, framed by a sunburst and other face carries a five-pointed star. A leather thong ties its cap to a side loop. The canteen or flask is a long-established form in Navajo silver. Small canteens worn at the belt or carried in a pouch held tobacco, snuff, or perfume, and their shape echoes the larger water canteens and ceramic flasks of the Southwest. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. Item # 206091
