Vintage sculptural umbrella stand – cream-white lacquered wood – Space Age / 1970s A particularly decorative vintage umbrella stand with a pronounced sculptural form. The tall cylinder shape is interrupted by large rounded cutouts, giving the object a different silhouette from every angle. The warm cream-white finish and organic lines give it that typical Space Age / 1970s look. The umbrella stand is made of lacquered wood/wood composite material and has a round, closed bottom with a plastic drip tray in which wet umbrellas can drain. Thanks to the large openings, umbrellas remain easily accessible. It also works well as a walking stick holder or purely as a decorative interior object. This type of sculptural hall item clearly fits within the design development of the 1960s and 1970s, when the traditional umbrella stand evolved into an independent design object. Kartell describes its umbrella stand designed by Gino Colombini as a classic from the sixties with a cylindrical shape and characteristic side openings. Also in German designs from the seventies by, among others, Jürgen Lange for Schönbuch, we see sculptural cylindrical forms with cut-out openings. Note: these examples are mentioned solely to illustrate the design style and period. The offered piece has no brand or designer name detected and is therefore not attributed to Kartell, Schönbuch, or a specific designer. Inside, there is an impressed/embossed marking with “1196” and “20 cm”. We could not establish a reliable manufacturer for this marking. Inside, hairline cracks in the finish around one of the openings are visible, as well as a small area of lacquer loss where the underlying material is visible. Additionally, there are local scratches, light discolorations, and other normal signs of use. These spots have been deliberately photographed clearly. Signs of wear are shown in the photos. A characterful umbrella stand for enthusiasts of Space Age, Mid-Century and 1970s design: functional, but above all a strongly sculptural object for the hall, entrance, office, or vintage interior.
