Undated (ca. 1652-1674) St. Patrick Halfpenny. Martin 4-E, W-11540.

Undated (ca. 1652-1674) St. Patrick Halfpenny. Martin 4-E, W-11540. Rarity-5+. Small Letters. VF-35 (PCGS). Glossy surfaces are smooth and hard during in-hand appreciation. Color is a handsome blend of medium golden-brown and chestnut, a bit lighter and more varied on the obverse. Impression on that side drawn to 11 o'clock, peripheral detail soft and/or running off flan in that area. Reverse likewise off center to 1 o'clock with similar softness at and around the letters in the word REX. Otherwise we note bold Choice VF detail with moderate wear most noticeable at lower right obverse, lower left reverse. The brassy-gold splasher is plainly evident, fairly well centered on the crown and bleeding minimally into the field at left. Faint, minor scratches in the center of the obverse and at left reverse border require magnification to discern, and we mention them here solely for the sake of completion. In sum, we find nothing to complain about with this coin, in the context of both this challenging type and the assigned grade. It is a highly desirable representative of the Small Letters St. Patrick halfpenny. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. Earlier ex Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society; Heritage's sale of the Eric P. Newman Collection, Part IV, May 2014, lot 30310, as NGC VF-30 BN. PCGS# 46. NGC ID: AUAS.
