Undated (ca. 1828) American Plantations Token, or 1/24 Part Real.

Superb American Plantations Token Matthew Young Restrike Undated (ca. 1828) American Plantations Token, or 1/24 Part Real. Restrike. Newman 5-D, W-1160. Rarity-4+. 11 Harp Strings. MS-62 (NGC). Last offered (as MS-64 PCGS) in our sale of November 2017, where we described this as: An absolutely amazing American Plantations token, with bold silvery mint frost unlike anything seen on the usually less intense luster of other high quality survivors. The strike is sharp and full and the surfaces are absolutely free of any of the tin pest that plagues almost all survivors to some degree. Some very minor flecks in the planchet are as struck and microscopic, and there is some darker patina in the central fields and intricacies on the reverse. This is the best one of these, restrike or not, that we have seen, and is the finest certified by PCGS. With the recent dispersal of several old time Colonial coin collections like Ford, Newman, Craige, etc., a small supply of rare or high quality Plantation Tokens has entered the marketplace, though none as fine as this; a finer quality American Plantations Token may not exist. At the time, this was the sole finest certified by PCGS. The current PCGS Population Report shows three graded MS-64 with none higher. This seems to still be among that number. Provenance: From the Winslet Collection. Earlier from Heritage's sale of September 2016, lot 5360; Heritage's sale of August 2017, lot 3009; our sale of November 2017, lot 4018. NGC Census: 7, 6 finer (MS-64 finest). PCGS# 52. NGC ID: AUB5. Click here for certification details from NGC.
