United Kingdom. Henry VII (1485-1509). Groat (No reserve price)

England – Henry VIII (1509-1547) – Silver groat of 4 pence – 16th century English silver coin attributed to the reign of Henry VIII (1509-1547). The type corresponds to a 4-pence groat, probably from Henry VIII’s second coinage, in the first half of the 16th century. Characteristics: Country: England Sovereign: Henry VIII Period: 16th century Probable denomination: Groat / 4 pence Metal: Silver Weight: 1.90 g Diameter: 23 mm Strike: Hammered coinage Description Obverse: Crowned bust of the king facing right, surrounded by a partially preserved Latin legend. The portrait and the crown remain clearly identifiable despite wear and numerous old marks on the fields. Reverse: Quartered shield bearing the France and England arms, set on a long cross. The peripheral legend is partially preserved and corresponds to the type used on Tudor groats from this period. Attribution All stylistic features — crowned portrait, quartered France and England arms, reverse size and arrangement — allow a probable attribution to a Henry VIII groat. The coin seems to be close to issues from the second coinage, around 1526-1544, generally associated with the Tower Mint in London. However, given the wear of the coin and the partial legibility of the mint marks, the precise sub-variety, the initial mark and the portrait type are not asserted with certainty. Condition Coin that has circulated heavily. Presence: - significant wear; - numerous scratches and old marks; - partially legible legends; - a weight loss compared to the usual theoretical weight for the type; - a slightly reduced/irregular flan. Nevertheless, the portrait of Henry VIII, the crown, and the France-England shield on the reverse remain clearly recognizable. The coin sold is exactly the one shown in the photographs. An interesting original Tudor coin from the 16th century, intended in particular for collectors of hammered English coins and of the Henry VIII era.
