Historical background: This innovative buckle safety system was officially approved by the American Ordnance Department on 27 July 1944 (as noted on the accompanying documents under reference number O.O. 063.1/3952). The mechanism was specifically designed to automatically decouple at a pressure of about 15 pounds. This prevented the soldier's neck from breaking due to the extreme air pressure (concussion) of nearby shell bursts.
