Unworn Necklace by Theodor Fahrner, Pforzheim c. 1955

Theodor Fahrner made artists' jewellery affordable because he combined modern forms with democratic materials. He did not create individual pieces for a small elite like Lalique or Cartier, but rather the designs were mass-produced in silver, decorated with enamel, marcasites, and occasionally gemstones. Salesmen with large sample cases presented the new designs developed in Pforzheim to the local jewellers. One such sample case full of unworn Fahrner jewellery has lain untouched in an attic for the last 40 years or more until we were able to purchase it. It contained samples of almost all series from about 1919 until the dissolution of the company in 1979, most of them with a model number or the "Original Fahrner" seal. The necklace here is therefore also unworn and shows in best condition - an original Fahrner label with the inscription "Original Fahrner / Since 1850" is on the piece of jewellery together with the old item number. The centerpiece of the necklace shows seven openwork links. The links are abstractly intertwined and shine with their different surface finishes. Beautiful pod-shaped links lead over to the spring clasp. The piece shows the typical design language of the 1950s with gentle sweeps and elegant detailed shapes.
