Unworn Ring With Shell Cameo by Theodor Fahrner, ca. 1965

Fahrner jewellery from Pforzheim occupies a special place in the history of Art Nouveau and Art Deco jewellery. For Theodor Fahrner and later his successor Gustav Braendle knew better than almost any other modern jewellery manufacturer how to make artistically convincing designs and quality workmanship the hallmark of their brooches, necklaces, bracelets and earrings. Salesmen with large sample cases presented the new designs developed in Pforzheim to local dealers every year. One such sample case had lain untouched in an attic for the last 40-plus years until it was offered to us for sale. It contained samples of most of the series from about 1919 until the dissolution of the company in 1979, mostly marked with a model number or the "Original Fahrner" seal. The piece of jewellery presented here comes from this case. It is therefore unworn and perfectly preserved. The round ring face is made of gold plated silver and presents a shell cameo in its center. The oval cameo shows a young lady in profile. The rest of the ring face is structured, allowing the light to refract beautifully at each indentation and elevation. A simple ring band of gold-plated silver completes the piece of jewellery made in the years around 1965. A wonderful overview of the wealth of designs is offered in the catalogue "Theodor Fahrner.
