Two antique Erdmann Schlegelmilch (E.S. Germany) Art Nouveau portrait vases - c. 1905 Description: Beautiful and fully intact pair of antique porcelain portrait vases in early Art Nouveau/Jugendstil style, manufactured by the renowned German porcelain manufacturer Erdmann Schlegelmilch (Suhl, Thuringia). Both vases bear at the base the authentic green factory mark with the shield, the initials 'E.S.' and the inscription 'Prov. Saxe' (Province of Saxony), in use from about 1902. Features and subject: The vases are executed in a deep burgundy/red base color with a beautiful glaze, richly adorned with fine gilding and turquoise- and white-colored ornaments. Characteristic are the graceful, openworked gilded handles at the top. In the center of each vase is a wonderfully detailed female portrait (allegorical depictions of the arts): • Vase 1: An elegant lady with a painter's palette in her hand (Painting). • Vase 2: A crowned muse with a sheet of music in her hand (Music/Poetry). The decorations are applied using a combined technique of a transfer-based (lithography) foundation and refined handwork, including hand-applied gold accents and raised white reliefs. Because the vases are designed as a pendant (pair), the ladies look charmingly at each other. Condition: The vases are in excellent antique condition. After careful inspection there are no cracks, chips, or restorations found. The porcelain is completely intact. There is only the usual, light age-related wear to the gilding, intrinsic to the age and contributing to its character. The vases are of course packed with the utmost care and insured for shipping. packed and sent registered/insured.
