Vase - Onyx - calcareous alabaster

Onyx vase (calcite alabaster) Estimated age: Mid-20th century (1950s–1970s) Materials: Onyx, often marketed under the name alabaster or onyx marble Style: Mid-century Modern / Decorative Classic Origin: Probably Mexico or Pakistan, regions famous for onyx craftsmanship Historical significance: These vases were popular interior decorative objects in the mid-century era, highlighting the natural veining of the stone. They have become icons of affordable interior design that mimics the luxury of hardstone materials. Although often labeled as 'onyx' in commerce, geologically it is calcite or aragonite, a stone much softer than true onyx. The color pattern is caused by successive mineral deposits in caves, creating the characteristic bands. These vases are often translucent when illuminated from the inside.
