Verreries de Scailmont – Art Deco Uranium Glass Covered Vanity Jar – Belgium, circa 1930 No Reserve Price An exquisite Art Deco covered vanity jar by the renowned Belgian glass manufacturer Verreries de Scailmont, dating from around 1930. A beautiful example of early 20th-century Belgian decorative glass, combining elegant geometric design, refined craftsmanship, and the remarkable optical qualities of uranium glass. The jar features a beautifully balanced cylindrical silhouette, decorated with an intricate moulded pattern of elongated diamonds, intersecting geometric lines, and delicate starburst motifs. Its original fitted lid, crowned with a sculptural, almost floral finial, perfectly complements the decorative composition and reflects the sophisticated geometric aesthetic of the Art Deco period. Crafted in vibrant green uranium glass, the jar displays a luminous, almost jewel-like appearance in natural daylight. Under ultraviolet light, the glass produces an intense fluorescent green glow, one of the most fascinating and desirable characteristics of historic uranium glass. Scailmont was particularly appreciated for its refined coloured glass production, including striking examples of uranium glass. An original Scailmont decanter featuring this exact decorative pattern is documented in a catalogue dating from circa 1930, reproduced in the reference publication Les Verreries de Scailmont à l’époque Art Déco. This important historical reference confirms the authenticity of the design and its connection to the factory’s Art Deco production. Originally conceived as an elegant dressing-table accessory, the jar could be used to store jewellery, small personal accessories, or other precious objects. Today, it remains a charming decorative piece, equally suited to a contemporary interior or a collection of historic European glass. The jar is preserved in very good vintage condition overall. There are a couple of small chips on the lid, clearly documented in the photographs. These minor imperfections are consistent with the age of the piece and do not detract from its beauty or decorative appeal. Apart from these, the jar remains in very good condition. Its brilliant colour, intricate geometric decoration, original fitted lid, and characteristic fluorescence make it particularly appealing to collectors of Art Deco, Belgian decorative arts, and uranium glass. Historical Background – Verreries de Scailmont Founded in 1901 in Manage, Belgium, by Henri-Raphaël Hirsch, Verreries de Scailmont became an important contributor to the development of Belgian decorative glass during the first half of the 20th century. The factory distinguished itself through its innovative approach to moulded and satin-finished glass, combining industrial production techniques with the artistic ambitions of the Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements. Its production included decorative vases, perfume bottles, tableware, and ornamental objects, often featuring sophisticated geometric patterns, coloured glass, enamelling, and other decorative techniques. Scailmont’s artistic reputation was further strengthened through its association with prominent designers, including Henri Heemskerk and Charles Catteau. The factory’s participation in the 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris reflected its involvement in the flourishing Belgian decorative arts industry of the period. Alongside prestigious manufacturers such as Val Saint Lambert and the artistic production of Boch Frères, Scailmont contributed to Belgium’s international reputation as an important centre of decorative arts. Its ability to combine artistic design with accessible industrial glass production helped bring modern decorative objects into a wider range of European interiors. The factory’s history continued through the changing landscape of the Belgian glass industry, eventually becoming associated with Durobor in the 1970s. Today, Verreries de Scailmont glass is appreciated by collectors for its distinctive designs, technical quality, and historical significance, representing an important chapter in the evolution of Belgian Art Deco glassmaking. Will be well packaged, protected and insured
