100 Years of the Wiener Werkstätte - The Price of Beauty. A magnificent edition with a very special orange plastic relief band appeared on the occasion of the exhibition at the MAK Vienna from December 10, 2003 to March 7, 2004. Contents see photo 8. The Wiener Werkstätte, founded in 1903 by Josef Hoffmann and Koloman Moser, became synonymous with branding in the decorative arts of the 20th century. The ambivalent history, marked by economic calamity and cultural institutionalization, is told in this richly designed publication, with historical images, documents and original texts, some of which are published here for the first time and selected by experts at the MAK (which has housed the important Wiener Werkstätte archive since 1955). This rich collection of materials is accompanied by a timeline that recalls the artistic, political, technological and cultural context of those years. Prominent Wiener Werkstätte objects, drawn from the domains of architecture, furniture, ceramics, glass, books, posters, postcards, carpets, jewelry, fashion and graphic design, are presented in countless full-page illustrations. The focus, however, is on the presentation of the innovative total concept that, in retrospect, established the Wiener Werkstätte as one of the historical avant-garde movements within consumer culture: the development of a corporate identity pushed to the extreme.
