Vibrant Green Malachite with Concentric Banding Artisanal...

AAA Quality Congo Malachite - Katanga Mines — This lot features a pyramid of remarkable size, entirely made from natural malachite originating from the Democratic Republic of Congo. The specimen is a superb example of artisanal mastery, assembled through the complex mosaic technique. This method consists in selecting, cutting, and precisely matching countless high-quality malachite fragments until a perfect geometric shape and a continuous, homogeneous, mirror-polished surface are produced. Direct observation reveals a fascinating universe of designs and colors. Each face of the pyramid is a geological picture in its own right, a collage of unique patterns that tell the mineral’s growth history. The famous concentric bands can be admired, alternating shades of bright emerald green with darker, almost black, bands, creating a hypnotic effect. The well-known “eyes” or ocelli also emerge, botryoidal structures that, once sectioned and polished, reveal concentric rings resembling irises. The surface, perfectly smooth, highlights the satin sheen of malachite, producing vibrant plays of light that change with the angle of viewing. Mineralogically, malachite is a hydrated copper carbonate that forms in the oxidation zones of copper ore deposits. Its typical globular or stalactitic concretion habit (botryoidal habit) is the origin of the complex, wavy designs that make it so sought after. In this case, the mosaic technique is not a compromise but a stylistic choice that maximizes the diversity of patterns present in the rough mineral, combining the most beautiful sections of different concretions into a single object. The craftsmanship of this piece testifies to high lapidary skill. The challenge is not only to cut the stone, relatively soft but fragile, but above all to orchestrate the fragments in harmony. The artisan has arranged the pieces following a visual flow, creating a work that is at once a solid geometric form and a dynamic, fluid surface. The result is an object that combines the rigor of the pyramidal shape, charged with ancestral symbolism, with the organic vitality and almost chaotic nature. As a collector’s item or decorative element, this pyramid has an undeniable visual impact. Malachite has been valued for millennia, from the amulets of ancient Egyptians to the sumptuous furnishings of the Russian Tsars. An specimen of this size and quality sits perfectly in a contemporary Wunderkammer, on the desk of a prestigious study, or as a focal point in luxury interior design, carrying with it the charm of geological history and human skill. **Technical details** **Name:** Malachite Pyramid **Classification:** Working mineral (Copper Carbonate) **Origin:** Democratic Republic of the Congo **Dimensions:** 95 x 104 x 104 mm **Weight:** 687 g **Conditions:** Natural, assembled with mosaic technique.
