Viking Bronze Stylised Valkyrie Pendant Circa 11th century AD An exceptional Viking bronze pendant depicting a stylised anthropomorphic figure representing a Valkyrie. The cast openwork body consists of a prominent head, a narrow torso and symmetrical curved elements extending along either side. The lower section tapers into a pointed terminal. A slender suspension projection extends vertically from the upper edge. In Norse mythology, the Valkyries were supernatural female beings associated with Odin, the chief of the gods, whose name derives from the Old Norse expression meaning "choosers of the slain". They were believed to determine the fate of warriors in battle and select those destined to enter Valhalla, Odin's great hall, where the fallen would prepare for the final battle of Ragnarok. Valkyries also appeared as attendants serving mead to the honoured dead, linking them with both warfare and the afterlife.
