Two large, dot-centred motifs form a balanced composition on either side of the central projection. Small surrounding dots and curved details enhance its sculptural appearance. Green and brown patina accentuates the depth between the raised elements, giving the piece a striking historical character. In Norse mythology, Óðinn sacrifices one of his eyes at Mímir’s well to gain wisdom. Known as Mímisbrunnr, the well lies beneath one of the roots of the cosmic tree Yggdrasill. Odin gives his eye in exchange for drinking its water; the eye thus embodies the price of knowledge and the desire to perceive beyond the visible world. The ring’s eye-like decoration carries a symbolic reading associated with this wisdom narrative. Geometric ornament on Viking Age jewellery provides a comparative context. Decorated Viking rings in the British Museum illustrate different arrangements of geometric designs across broad bands; the comparison concerns decorative practice. The intact body, distinct relief and preserved surface details make this a noteworthy example for collectors interested in Scandinavian jewellery and Norse mythology. Note Warm lighting inspired by museum illumination was used to naturally highlight the object’s surface, form, craftsmanship and historical appearance. Suspension cords and other display accessories visible in the photographs serve as presentation aids and are not included in the sale. ★ Please refer to the stated measurements when assessing the actual size.
