When gemmologists first brought the previously unknown violet-blue gemstones from the steppes of Tanzania to New York in 1967, the firm Tiffany & Co. secured the rights to this mineral, which occurs on our planet about a thousand times more rarely than diamond. Owing to its rarity and beauty, it is little wonder that this gemstone – tanzanite – soon became one of the most coveted minerals in the art of fine jewellery. At the centre of this piece lies a large tanzanite, sparkling in an unusually rich hue, surrounded by an entourage of 26 white diamonds. Like petals around a flower, the brilliant-cut diamonds encircle the coloured centre stone, which is presented as an oval cabochon, measuring over 20 mm in length and weighing approximately 15.35 carats. The ring mount is crafted in 14-carat white gold. The natural tanzanite displays a colour that shifts between cornflower blue and violet. At times, a deep blue gleams at its heart; at others, it reveals a softer violet tone towards the shorter sides – a marvellous play of hues that makes the ring appear ever-changing and enchanting. The ring is hand-forged and stylistically dates to the mid-1970s – created only shortly after the discovery of this enchanting gemstone. A striking piece of jewellery, accompanied by an independent certificate of authenticity.
