Do you know why bracelets like this one are called “tennis bracelets”? The name became famous in 1978 when tennis player Chris Evert lost her diamond-studded rivière bracelet during a match at the U.S. Open. The match was even paused so she could put her beloved piece of jewellery back on. From that moment on, the sparkling bracelet has borne the name “tennis bracelet”—a name it’s known by to this day—and has thus made jewelry history. Previously, they were known as Rivière bracelets. The French word “rivière” means “river” and describes the evenly flowing brilliance of the diamonds. Thanks to flexible links—usually crafted in white gold—the individually set gemstones gently nestle against the wrist, where they display their harmonious sparkle. The vintage tennis bracelet from the 1980s offered here is a true statement piece. Along its length, 45 white brilliant-cut diamonds are strung together; of very fine quality, they collectively weigh 4.50 carats. Set evenly and with the highest brilliance, they seem to float almost weightlessly in their simple 18-karat white gold settings—a stream of diamonds that shimmers unobtrusively yet elegantly.
