Voltaire

Lot of three works, four volumes. The Characters of Theophrastus with The Characters or the Manners of this Century. By M. De La Bruyère, augmented by the Défense de La Bruyère by M. Coste. Amsterdam, At F. Changuion, 1741. Complete works in two volumes; pp. (8), 487, (1); (6), 580; cm. 17 x 10. In full contemporary leather with abrasions and a loss at the top of the spine, light natural foxing. Beautiful prize label applied to the front board of Volume I. Nouveaux essais d'explication physique du premier chapitre de la génèse. Par M. De Saint Rambert. Utrecht, At Guillaume Broedelet, 1713. A critical and in many ways philosophical study of Genesis and its influence on Religion, also seen in the light of Cartesian thought. A somewhat uncommon work in its first edition. Defect at the top of the spine of the binding in full leather, contemporary, and minimal worming traces, but essentially a good specimen. Pp. (36), 344; cm. 17 x 10. L'oracle des nouveaux philosophes pour servir de suite et d'éclaircissement aux oeuvres de M. de Voltaire. Berne, 1759. A critique sometimes sympathetic, but sharp, written by Claude-Marie Guyon toward Voltaire, here called “the oracle,” prophet of the Enlightenment philosophers. Traces of worming on the boards of the contemporary binding and in full leather, otherwise a good copy. Pp. XVI, 326, cm. 17 x 10.
